Australia is expected to raise interest rates for the fifth time this year

According to CoinMeta, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is expected to raise interest rates for the fifth time this year on Tuesday in an effort to curb inflation more aggressively. Most economists anticipate that the RBA will raise the cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.85%, which would be a 18-year high. Money market pricing indicates that the probability of a rate hike is around 80%. This decision will come alongside an update to economic forecasts, and RBA Governor Philip Lowe will hold a press conference one hour after the rate decision. Economists say that inflation is far above the target and has risen unexpectedly, with no signs of significant relief. If the RBA does not raise rates, its credibility could be damaged, and it may further solidify higher inflation expectations.
