OneKey Founder Warning: Old iPhone Poses Security Risks as a Cold Wallet

According to CoinMeta, the founder of OneKey, Yishi Wang, warns that using older models of iPhone as cold wallets may not be secure. In the past two weeks, several public iPhone jailbreak demonstrations have shown that models from iPhone 11 and earlier have chip vulnerabilities, which cannot be eliminated even by resetting the device and enabling flight mode. Yishi points out that unencrypted phones can be exploited by attackers when unattended or borrowed, a tactic referred to as a “bad maid” attack. Additionally, attackers can use specialized USB tools to run code before the iOS is launched, without the need for an internet connection. Outdated software, short passwords, and weak wallet passwords can make attacks easier. If the encrypted wallet files are extracted, attackers can attempt to guess the passwords offline. Yishi also mentions a technique called selective hijacking, which allows access to data on vulnerable old software. Apple fixed this issue in iOS 18.4. Yishi recommends generating brand-new mnemonics in a trusted environment and transferring funds; simply creating new addresses with the same old mnemonics is not sufficient. It’s worth noting that users who are using the most recently updated iPhone do not need to worry too much.
