Analyst: AI's copycat games force independent developers to withdraw trial versions; Anthropic begins to put the brakes on Claude Code

According to CoinMeta, the phenomenon of AI clones of games has led independent developers to withdraw their trial versions. Recently, Anthropic imposed restrictions on the Opus 5.5 update of Claude Code, allowing for the development of original games and the use of existing gameplay elements, but prohibiting direct cloning of specific games. Even if a game changes its name and claims to be an original work, it is still not permitted. Engineer Addy Osmani confirmed that this change is aimed at preventing intellectual property infringement. In March of this year, developer Freya Holm showcased a rotating version of Tetris, which saw the appearance of numerous AI imitations before it was officially released. Game studio Digital Sun also canceled its public trial due to concerns that its new game would be preemptively copied by AI. Under U.S. copyright law, game mechanics and rules are generally not protected by copyright, but specific artistic elements, text, and code may be. Currently, Claude mainly relies on warning messages to restrict cloning behavior, but it may not be possible to accurately distinguish between legitimate borrowing and infringement.
