Tokyo CPI still above the Bank of Japan's target, expectations for future interest rate hikes remain

According to CoinMeta, the growth rate in Tokyo CPI is still far higher than the Bank of Japan's target of 2%, highlighting the persistent pressure on prices. A few hours after the data was released, the Bank of Japan will announce its interest rate decision, and the market expects it to remain unchanged this time. Friday's data showed that Tokyo's CPI in October, excluding fresh food, rose by 2.6% year-on-year, a slight slowdown from the 2.7% increase in September. The overall inflation rate is 2.8%, and the price index, excluding fresh food and energy prices, rose by 2.6%. The government's subsidies provided in October to reduce summer electricity and urban gas costs have helped to curb the upward pressure on prices, but this effect may gradually fade over the next few months. Therefore, the data released on Friday is unlikely to prevent the Bank of Japan from raising interest rates in the coming months. Despite the subsidy measures, energy prices continue to contribute to the overall rise in prices, with electricity prices rising by 1.7% and natural gas prices by 4.9%.
