According to CoinMeta, the Solana validator client Agave version 4.4 is expected to activate several protocol updates. These include allowing blocks to contain transactions with failed account verification for transaction fees. Verifiers will skip the execution of such transactions, reducing the number of invalid transactions in the block. During the upgrade, the storage capacity will be automatically adjusted, and the excess SOL that is freed up will be returned to designated accounts. The forward error correction (FEC) group will be unified to 32 data shards and 32 encoding shards, simplifying block verification. In the staking reward calculation, inactive stakings during the corresponding reward period will be excluded, reducing the complexity of consensus processing. Additionally, version 4.4 is expected to complete the last three stages of the account storage rent reduction plan, lowering the minimum balance per byte required to maintain a rent exemption from the initial 6,960 lamports to 696 lamports, representing a cumulative reduction of 90%. According to Ghost, after the full implementation of these adjustments, approximately 3.08 million SOL (about $300 million) on the chain will be able to be reclaimed.
