The UK insists on maintaining the North Sea oil and gas windfall tax until 2030, rejecting industry requests for an early cancellation

According to CoinMeta, the UK government has decided to continue imposing a windfall tax on North Sea oil and gas producers, rejecting industry calls to terminate this tax next year. According to the budget announced on Wednesday, the current energy profit tax, which is 38%, will continue to be in place until April 1, 2030, unless the price floor mechanism is triggered in advance to terminate it. After the expiration of this tax, it will be immediately replaced by a permanent tax mechanism linked to energy prices. Relevant operators have been urging the Labour government to introduce a new fiscal mechanism, rather than waiting until the end of this century, believing that an early transition to a new tax system will stimulate investment and increased production, thereby bringing more tax revenue to the government. Oil and gas producers complain that this tax weakens the UK's attractiveness to investors; in recent years, many companies have re-evaluated their operations in the UK and chosen to sell, merge, or reduce their operational scale. BP (British Petroleum) is currently the only major oil company that still has an independent North Sea business, but the company is in the process of withdrawing from this region.
