According to CoinMeta, a bizarre database deletion incident occurred on GitHub. Stainless, a company acquired by Anthropic, performed code cleanup, resulting in the code of customer Dodo Payments disappearing within two seconds. The team initially thought they had been hacked. The incident took place on October 27th when Stainless deleted a private repository, which inadvertently also deleted the private fork of Dodo. GitHub's policies stipulate that when a private repository is deleted, all associated private fork repositories are also deleted. The audit logs of GitHub show that only one external individual executed the deletion, and it was not indicated that this was a chain reaction triggered by an upstream database deletion. Co-founder Ayush Agarwal could not find any authorization records for this person, and the repository was not listed among those that could be restored. Fortunately, Dodo had a local copy of the code, which was eventually re-uploaded as an independent repository, and SDK has since resumed operations. Agarwal hopes that GitHub will clearly indicate the cause of the upstream database deletion in the audit logs and reminds other Stainless customers to convert their private repositories that still depend on the upstream ones to independent repositories as soon as possible.
