Ledger discovers that a hidden chip has been implanted in a hardware wallet to steal mnemonic phrases

CoinMeta data: In a statement regarding the update, Ledger stated that some Ledger cryptocurrency wallet devices sold by Southeast Asian resellers Cryptobilis contained concealed hardware that stole users' 24-word seed phrases and transmitted them to attackers via mobile networks. Ledger indicated that this spy chip was located inside the device casing. When users set up the wallets and the seed phrases were displayed on the screen, the embedded microcontroller recognized and decoded these phrases, which were then sent via LTE data transmission technology. Ledger confirmed that affected wallets contained unauthorized implants, and all confirmed losses involved devices sold by Cryptobilis. On-chain researchers estimate that the loss amounts to up to $93.2 million, involving over 300 wallets. Ledger has stopped selling Ledger wallets and advises customers not to initialize devices purchased from this reseller.
