Step-5 to be released in four days, but the license is still missing
2026-10-12 16:31:11
According to CoinMeta, Stepfun announced that it would release the open-weight version of its flagship Step-5 model, bf16, on October 15, 2026. However, as of now, the licenses for these weights have not been published through any official channels. For enterprise deployers and AI developers, the missing documents are not a trivial matter; they are crucial. Without them, the legal status of commercial use, modification, and redistribution remains unclear. A report on September 20 pointed out, "The terms of the license are still unknown. The extent to which the weights can be used commercially, modified, and redistributed depends on the license conditions." The only document currently claiming to be the Stepfun community license is located on a third-party Hugging Face page, rather than on any domain name belonging to Stepfun. This page claims to allow commercial use and prohibits autonomous weapons, surveillance, and malicious network activities. Meanwhile, the official Hugging Face organization of Stepfun does not even list the code repository for Step-5.
