2026 Hardware Wallet Security Survey: Ledger Devices Were Tampered With
2026-10-12 07:55:50
According to CoinMeta, six hardware wallet brands disclosed security issues in 2026, but users only lost encrypted assets in two cases. The latest incident involved Ledger devices being tampered with before reaching their buyers. Attackers have targeted nearly every aspect related to 24-word mnemonics this year, resulting in Coldcard wallets losing over $115 million. The security team of Ledger used lasers to attack Trezor Safe 7 and Tangem cards in June and July; Trezor stated that user funds are safe, while Tangem claimed the risk is “almost non-existent.” In addition, Bitbox fixed several serious firmware defects without reporting any theft of funds. Ledger confirmed that the number of affected devices is limited and is cooperating with relevant authorities. Investigators estimate the loss to be close to $90 million. Ledger advises users to purchase devices only through official channels and reminds buyers of Cryptobilis not to set up unused devices.
