Visa Closes the rebate vulnerability for purchasing meme currency through incorrect merchant category codes
2026-09-19 10:04:27
According to CoinMeta, Visa has notified payment processors such as checkout.com to stop using the “digital goods media” merchant category code for processing meme coin transactions. This adjustment is expected to end next week. Previously, when users used Visa and Mastercard credit cards to purchase meme coins through Crossmint, the transactions were incorrectly labeled as digital media in order to qualify for credit card cashbacks. After JPMorgan Chase raised concerns about this classification with Visa, Visa determined that such transactions should not be eligible for rewards. In the future, purchases of meme coins will need to be processed as cryptocurrency transactions and will be subject to the corresponding restrictions.
