According to CoinMeta, Ethereum developers warn that any teenager could take advantage of the free test environment for Ethereum and its replaceable builder identities to repeatedly win new block auctions on Ethereum while refusing to fulfill the transactions. The public test for the Glamsterdam upgrade is scheduled for October 6th, targeting the Sepolia test network. While such an attack would not endanger funds on the mainnet, it could lead to a lack of transaction activity in blocks, disrupting infrastructure testing. Ethereum consensus developer Potuz stated that existing security measures will only revert to locally built blocks after multiple instances of such attacks occur. Clients need to be able to identify and reject individual builders to prevent attackers from returning under new identities. Developers must release software suitable for Sepolia by September 29th; the time frame is tight because the Sepolia updates are relatively concentrated, making recovery easier in case of issues. The next public test, scheduled for Hoodi, is tentatively set for October 27th, and developers will decide whether to maintain this date after observing Sepolia.
