According to CoinMeta, today the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 1.2%, and the S&P 500 index dropped by 0.4% due to the Federal Reserve's first interest rate hike since 2023, with hints that it may continue to tighten monetary policy in the future. The Fed unanimously raised the benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4.00%, stating that despite ongoing economic expansion, inflation remains high. The Dow Jones index closed at 51,461.90 points, performing the worst among the major indices, while the S&P 500 index fell to 7,551.81 points. The Nasdaq Composite Index was almost flat, with a slight decline of less than 0.1%. Small-cap stocks also showed weakness, with the Russell 2000 index falling by about 0.4%. This week, the S&P 500 index has fallen by approximately 1.4%, the Dow Jones by 2.1%, and the Nasdaq by 1.3%. The market is uneasy about the Fed's prospects, as new forecasts show that 16 out of 18 policymakers expect at least one more 25-basis-point interest rate hike before 2026.
