Latin American telecom company Viva achieves stable coin settlement through the Iris network
2026-09-16 22:08:39
CoinMeta data: Latin American telecom operator Viva is moving some of its financial processes onto the blockchain via the Iris network, which is a new platform designed to help mobile operators transform their customer relationships and distribution networks into payment and other financial services. Viva has been operating in Bolivia for over 25 years and has recently expanded into Mexico, becoming the first operator to go live on this platform. The company uses a stablecoin, USDI, backed by US dollars issued by the stablecoin infrastructure company Agora, to settle transactions, and holds its qualified operational reserves in US dollars rather than local currencies. Iris was founded by former blockchain venture capital partner of IBM, Jules Miller. She stated, “Iris is a financial network for telecom operators.” The network has received a commitment of $43 million from Balesia Group, which operates in telecommunications services in the Americas. Iris is expected to focus on expansion in Latin America, as well as possibly parts of Africa and Asia, rather than the United States.
