Central Bank of Russia: Rapid spread of global digital assets poses risk of currency substitution
2026-09-15 10:18:28
According to CoinMeta, Wu said that the Central Bank of Russia mentioned in the latest draft of "Main Directions for the Development of the Russian Financial Market 2027–2029" that global digital assets, including cryptocurrencies and stablecoins, are spreading rapidly, with a high level of participation among residents of various countries. Since some digital assets have payment functions, there is a risk that they could be used by users, including Russian citizens, as alternatives to national currencies, that is, as "monetary substitutes." The Central Bank of Russia also believes that the anonymity, decentralization, and cross-border nature of some cryptocurrencies may increase the risk of their use in illegal activities and undermine the effectiveness of regulatory restrictions by individual countries. Currently, there is still a lack of unified standards for the regulation of digital assets worldwide.
