According to CoinMeta, from September 6th to 8th, the Office of the Attorney General of Mexico, the Navy, and the police force of Puebla state jointly raided an illegal cryptocurrency mining facility hidden in the Sierra Norte mountainous region. Approximately 300 mining machines were seized, which directly drew electricity from a federal hydroelectric dam. Investigators linked the facility to organized crime, with preliminary charges focusing on electricity theft. The facility was located within a dilapidated building and was connected to the medium-voltage infrastructure of the Nueva Necaxa hydroelectric dam. The surge in energy consumption, traced by the power company and local police, exceeded the baseline consumption of the surrounding rural communities. Residents reported hearing the mechanical humming of the cooling systems from a distance of one kilometer from the mining site. In addition to the mining machines, law enforcement officers also found 80 medium-voltage terminals and transformers, as well as 8 satellite antennas, which allowed the mining site to have an internet connection independent of any local providers.
