Coinbase: Building a financial account for AI, CEO Brian Armstrong reveals
2026-09-10 01:13:26
According to CoinMeta, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced that the cryptocurrency exchange is building payment infrastructure for artificial intelligence, named Coinbase for Agents, aimed at providing independent bank accounts and portfolios for AI models, allowing them to manage their funds autonomously. This announcement stems from a tweet by the founder of Ruby on Rails, David Heinemeier Hansson, who was looking for a “proxy bank” that would allow machines to set spending limits and “process transactions.” Armstrong confirmed that Coinbase is building financial accounts for AI; models such as Claude or ChatGPT will be connected through local MCP servers but will have strictly isolated sub-accounts. Users set daily spending limits and maximum amounts for individual transactions, after which the robots will begin to operate autonomously. Armstrong is expanding the boundaries of this autonomy every week. The launch of this platform comes after internal optimization activities at Coinbase; Armstrong previously cut about 14% of its staff, with approximately 700 employees being replaced by a native team at AI.
