OpenAI Solved a 90-Year-Old Math Problem with $15 Million

According to CoinMeta, OpenAI used 15 million dollars in tokens to solve a mathematical problem that has a history of 90 years. The Navier-Stokes equations describe the motion of fluids, ranging from water rotating in glass to air flowing over wings. The problem concerned whether smooth three-dimensional flows can remain stable forever, or whether they will collapse into a singularity with infinite speed within a finite time. OpenAI deployed 10,000 coordinated AI agents, which would cost ordinary users 15 million dollars in tokens, in conjunction with the next-generation model. The system first solved a simpler version of the problem and then produced a complete solution in just 88 hours. The proposed solution identified a vortex that spiraled inward and stretched until the flow collapsed, while maintaining a limited total energy. This proof was subsequently formally verified in Lean, allowing computers to check every logical step. The problem came with a $1 million prize from the Clay Mathematics Institute; however, OpenAI stated that they would not accept this prize.
