According to CoinMeta, the first Bitcoin fraud case has led to charges against 18 individuals, who are accused of stealing $263 million in cryptocurrency from a victim. The main perpetrator, Marlon Lim, a 22-year-old high school dropout from Singapore, is expected to plead guilty on Tuesday. He impersonated employees of Google and other companies to deceive residents of Washington D.C. into handing over access to 4,100 Bitcoins. The gang squandered $4 million at nightclubs in Los Angeles within a month, with Lim spending $569,000 in just one night. Even while in prison, he continued to operate his schemes, ordering Hermes Birkin bags for his girlfriend in Miami. The U.S. Department of Justice is prosecuting this case, having previously disbanded a specialized crypto enforcement unit dedicated to handling such cases.
