According to CoinMeta, the so-called white-hat hackers involved in the Liquid network security incident have promised to return “the majority” of the nearly 4000 BTC they extracted after fixing the vulnerabilities. This unusual promise was made during an on-chain dialogue between these unidentified hackers and Blockstream. According to Galaxy Research official Alex Thorn, the two parties communicated through Bitcoin OP_return messages and PGP encrypted text. The incident began on Sunday, when approximately 4000 BTC were extracted from the Liquid joint wallet, which accounts for about 95% of the Bitcoin that has been minted on that sidechain. Liquid subsequently disabled its bridging nodes and suspended the network. Around $320 million was consolidated into a single Bitcoin address, accompanied by a message stating, “We are white-hat hackers; please contact us on-chain.” Thorn reported that the hackers responded in block 965,869, asking if they could return “the majority” of the funds to the joint wallet. The hackers indicated that they would not return the Bitcoin until the network vulnerability was fixed.
