South Korean National Tax Service: Bankruptcy of Overseas Crypto Accounts Still Requires Declaration

According to CoinMeta, on August 28th, the South Korean National Tax Service explained that even if South Korean residents' overseas cryptocurrency exchange accounts become unable to be traded or withdrawn due to the bankruptcy of the exchanges, they are still obligated to file declarations for their overseas financial accounts. If a taxpayer's balance in an overseas financial account exceeds 500 million Korean won at the end of any month, they must declare digital assets starting from 2023. In 2026, the amount of digital assets declared was 10.5 trillion Korean won, a year-on-year decrease of 5.4%. Of this, individuals held 9.8 trillion Korean won, which is a year-on-year increase of 5.4%, while legal entities held 700 billion Korean won, a year-on-year decrease of 61.1%.
