Why can cryptocurrencies be traded 24/7 while stocks still need to close?

According to CoinMeta, Coinpaper wrote an article discussing why cryptocurrencies can be traded around the clock, whereas stocks are still subject to fixed trading hours. Bitcoin can be traded on weekends and holidays, but this is not possible for stocks of companies like Apple and NVIDIA. The article points out that although technically it is feasible, the infrastructure for stock trading, such as brokers, market makers, and clearing institutions, still relies on traditional trading days. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is holding roundtable meetings to discuss the preparations for 24-hour stock trading, including issues related to liquidity, settlement, and closing prices. Although the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is moving towards a more continuous trading model, weekend trading still faces challenges, as banks and clearing systems follow the weekday schedule.
