SoftBank-backed SB Energy applies for IPO, aiming at the power demand of AI data centers

According to CoinMeta, SoftBank-backed power infrastructure company SB Energy has applied for a initial public offering (IPO) in the United States, becoming the latest firm seeking to profit from the growing demand for data center electricity. As per the documents submitted by the company, its revenue in the first half of 2026 was 139 million dollars, with a net loss of 3.2 billion dollars, compared to revenue of 83 million dollars and a net loss of 216 million dollars in the same period last year. SB Energy owns a portfolio of solar and battery energy storage assets and is developing a 9.2 gigawatt natural gas power plant that will supply electricity to an artificial intelligence data center. Both OpenAI and SoftBank have agreed to invest 500 million dollars each in SB Energy to build and operate a 1.2 gigawatt data center located in Texas.
