Bank of England Governor warns of a "black swan" event with AI: Cutting-edge models may amplify the risks of financial crises
2026-08-31 15:15:55
According to CoinMeta, Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England and Chair of the Financial Stability Board, has warned UK Chancellor of the Exchequer and central bank governors that the cybersecurity risks posed by cutting-edge AI models may resonate with existing vulnerabilities such as high inflation, high interest rates, and financial market leverage, further increasing the risk of severe shocks to the global financial system. He pointed out that if multiple financial institutions or shared technology providers experience systemic disruptions at the same time, the existing financial defense mechanisms could face a severe test. At the same time, the capabilities of cyberattacks driven by AI and identity fraud are rapidly increasing, while some countries have not yet established mature regulatory frameworks for the development, release, and deployment of cutting-edge AI models. Bailey also warned that the debt pressures in the areas of high-valued sovereign and private credit driven by the AI boom, as well as the continuously accumulating market leverage, could all become potential triggers for "disorderly adjustments" in financial markets. He suggested that financial institutions deploy "bare metal" backup systems that are physically isolated from the main networks to improve their resilience in the event of catastrophic cyberattacks.
