According to CoinMeta, data released by Statistics Canada on Thursday showed that Canada's current account surplus in the second quarter was 8.84 billion Canadian dollars (about 6.4 billion US dollars), the largest surplus since 2005 and the fourth-largest current account surplus since relevant data became available in 1981. This surplus more than tripled economists' expectations and was mainly driven by commodity exports, particularly exports of energy products. Affected by the surge in global oil prices caused by the Iran war, Canada's exports of energy products increased by 27.4% in the second quarter. The funds flowing into Canadian government bonds also set a record, with foreign investors increasing their holdings of Canadian government bonds by 80.8 billion Canadian dollars.
