South Korea's central bank raises interest rates consecutively and raises economic growth forecasts

According to CoinMeta, the Bank of Korea raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 3.00% on Thursday, as expected, marking the second consecutive increase due to inflation remaining above target levels and ongoing financial stability risks. The Bank of Korea’s Monetary Policy Committee voted to raise the 7-day repurchase rate to its highest level since February 2025. Eighteen out of 35 economists surveyed by Reuters had previously predicted an interest rate hike. In addition, the Bank of Korea raised its economic growth forecast for this year from 2.6% in July to 3.3%, while maintaining its inflation forecast at 2.7% unchanged. Market expectations suggest that the Bank of Korea will raise rates again in the first quarter of 2027 and will then keep them unchanged until at least the end of next year. Economists from Daishin Securities, kong and dong-rak, indicated that the terminal interest rate could reach 3.50%.
