Unstoppable Domains Abandons ICANN Plan and Offers Refunds
2026-08-27 04:16:40
According to CoinMeta, Unstoppable Domains announced the abandonment of its plan to seek approval for ICANN, citing that compliance requirements, application processes, and auction costs exceeded expected sales revenue. The company failed to submit applications for nine Web3 extensions, including crypto, wallet, and blockchain, before the round of closures in 2026. Unstoppable Domains plans to refund affected customers, but has not yet published a complete list of eligible extensions or the refund process. Founder Matthew Gould stated that, despite not obtaining ICANN approval, these domain names will continue to operate as on-chain assets.
