According to CoinMeta, Australian Prime Minister Albanese stated that he has obtained the consent of regional leaders, including those from Queensland who previously held opposing views, to promote new regulations regarding the energy usage of artificial intelligence data centers, with the goal of implementing them next year. The Australian National Cabinet has agreed to establish minimum requirements for data centers' use of electricity, water resources, and land. The government plans to draft the new regulations by the end of this year and to legislate them in early 2027. Albanese said, "We have reached a consensus on Australia's national-level artificial intelligence legislation. We want to ensure that while attracting investment, there is no situation where eight different systems are operating simultaneously across the country." Queensland and the Northern Territory initially opposed Albanese's proposal, which included requiring high-energy-consuming data centers to use renewable energy. Queensland officials previously believed that this would give Canberra greater control and might deter investment.
