According to CoinMeta, IBM announced a new generation of dual-architecture host processors at the Hot Chips conference. For the first time, a single chip is capable of natively running both the IBM host instruction set and the Arm instruction set, and it can switch between the two architectures at nanosecond speeds without the need for simulation or conversion. The chip is manufactured using 2-nanometer technology, features 11 cores, has a base frequency of over 5.7GHz, and integrates a AI inference accelerator that can directly execute tasks such as fraud detection during financial transaction processing. This move means that institutions like banks will not need to rewrite host code from decades ago, nor will they need to deploy additional independent AI servers, in order to introduce modern AI software ecosystems into their host systems. IBM stated that this processor is the first major achievement since their collaboration with Arm was initiated in April 2026. By supporting the Arm architecture, IBM hosts will be able to directly connect to the vast Arm software ecosystem and AI development framework.
