Ethereum developers propose a quantum-safe staking upgrade

According to CoinMeta, Ethereum developers submitted a draft on August 24 proposing the establishment of a quantum-safe validator deposit contract that would allow the network to gradually replace the current signature system. This draft is still an unmerged proposal and has not yet been selected for network upgrades. The proposed contract supports variable-length public keys, signatures, and credential metadata, with each deposit including a scheme identifier that indicates the encryption system used by the validator. The contract is referred to as “quantum-safe ready,” but it will not make Ethereum itself quantum-resistant. The proposal also includes a phased migration mechanism; developers can enable the new deposit system in the initial stages while allowing other signature schemes to be implemented later on. This proposal requires technical discussion, specification work, security analysis, client implementation, and testing, and core developers will need to choose to implement it in a future hard fork.
