According to CoinMeta, Finance Minister Scott Bessent stated that the Treasury Department might utilize its nearly $1 trillion general fiscal account (TGA) to fund the recently announced bond repurchase program. Last week, the Treasury Department unexpectedly announced that it would increase the scale of long-term bond repurchases from $2 billion to at least $4 billion. In an interview with CNBC, Bessent mentioned that these operations could potentially exceed the new, higher minimum limits. Although the Treasury Department has not specified how it will fund these purchases, market participants generally believe that it will be done by selling short-term government bonds. Treasury officials said that using TGA will provide them with considerable influence over long-term bond yields.
