Masayoshi Son borrows 1 trillion yen from Japanese retail investors to continue to 'transfuse blood' into OpenAI

According to CoinMeta, Masayoshi Son issued 1 trillion yen (approximately $6.3 billion) in corporate bonds to individual investors in Japan, setting a record for individuals in Japan issuing corporate bonds. The bond term is 7 years, with interest rates set at 4.3% to 4.9% for now. The funds will be used for AI investments and to repay existing debts, which is one of the current largest capital needs. This is the third time this year that SoftBank has issued bonds to retail investors, having raised 418 billion yen in April and 260 billion yen in June. SoftBank previously promised to make an additional investment of $30 billion in OpenAI; the last $10 billion of this will be paid in October, bringing the total investment to $64.6 billion, with a stake of about 13%. However, 1 trillion yen is still not enough. Analyst Sharon Chen from Bloomberg Intelligence estimates that even after receiving this funding, SoftBank will still have a funding gap of over $20 billion and may continue to issue bonds overseas in the short term. To attract retail investors, SoftBank has offered significantly higher interest rates; currently, the yield on 5-year and 10-year Japanese government bonds is around 2.13% and 2.88%, respectively.
