U.S.-Canada trade talks break down, 50% tariffs take effect, Kerry vows retaliation

According to CoinMeta, US-Canada trade negotiations broke down on Friday evening in Washington, ending a three-day round of talks and reigniting the trade war that has been tense since early 2025. The United States failed to reach an agreement by the midnight deadline and decided to impose 50% tariffs on Canadian goods worth approximately $20 billion, which accounts for about 5% of Canada's annual exports to the US. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau quickly responded, stating that Canada would match the new tariffs on US steel, dairy products, and electronics on a "dollar for dollar" basis starting September 8th. Analysts point out that these tariffs are unlikely to have a significant impact on American consumers, but the more significant aspect is the re-emergence of hostility in the economic relations between the two countries.
