The Sandbox: $4.9 billion of new tokens were infinitely minted due to a security vulnerability
2026-08-22 16:17:42
According to CoinMeta, the cross-chain contract of The Sandbox ( SAND ) encountered an infinite mining attack on the Base network, resulting in the creation of nearly $49 billion worth of SAND tokens across more than 400 transactions. Despite this security vulnerability, the price of SAND still rose by about 4.76%, and trading volume increased by over 400%. According to a report from security company Blockaid, attackers took control of the LayerZero delegation permissions and used " approveandcall " to bypass normal controls, mining unsupported SAND tokens. The attack is still ongoing, but the The Sandbox team has confirmed and completely contained this vulnerability, stating that the impact is less than 0.01% of the total supply.
