Lula calls Trump to seek the resumption of tariff negotiations
2026-08-22 02:15:30
According to CoinMeta, Brazilian President Lula called U.S. President Trump on Friday, urging him to restart negotiations regarding the additional tariffs imposed by the United States on Brazil, with the aim of easing relations with Washington before Brazil's October elections. In a statement, the Brazilian government said that Lula rejected the accusations of unfair trade practices by Brazil, which led to the U.S. imposing 25% tariffs on many Brazilian goods. During the call, which lasted over an hour, Lula told Trump that these accusations were “baseless.” The Brazilian side stated that Trump proposed for officials from both governments to meet as soon as possible. This is the first telephone conversation between the leaders of the two countries since their relations deteriorated again in May of this year.
