OCBC: Indonesia's new central bank governor turns to testing the rupiah exchange rate

According to CoinMeta, OCBC Bank stated that the new governor of the Indonesian Central Bank's shift from a high-yield policy to testing the rupiah exchange rate may pose risks to the recent upward trend of the rupiah. During the first policy meeting on Wednesday, acting governor Destry Damayanti indicated that the central bank will move towards providing hedging incentives rather than continuing to push up the yields of rupiah securities. At the same time, the central bank has maintained its benchmark interest rate unchanged. Damayanti said that this move will help support the rupiah exchange rate and economic growth. OCBC Bank of Singapore's strategist Christopher Wong noted that it is a prudent move for the central bank not to rely indefinitely on the rising yields of rupiah bonds to support the currency. He pointed out that although the series of hedging incentives recently introduced by the central bank can reduce monetary risks to some extent, these measures are unlikely to bring in capital flows on their own. The demand from foreign investors will ultimately depend on the recovery of yields, market confidence in the rupiah, policy direction, as well as the overall trends in U.S. Treasury yields and oil prices.
