Bitcoin May Be the Escape from the Trap of Being a Reserve Currency for the US Dollar

According to CoinMeta, and as reported by Forbes, Bitcoin is considered a potential neutral reserve asset. This topic has resurfaced due to an old video of the US Vice President JD Vance in which he questioned whether the dollar's status as a reserve currency is ultimately beneficial to the United States. Commentator Dave Birnbaum discussed the role of the dollar within the Bretton Woods system, drawing on statements by Vance and Triffin's paradoxical arguments. Vance pointed out that the global demand for the dollar allows American consumers to purchase foreign goods at low prices, while also providing the US with exceptionally easy borrowing opportunities. Birnbaum believes that this arrangement creates a conflict between the benefits Americans derive from the dollar's dominance and the pressure it exerts on domestic manufacturers and exporters. The international status of the dollar is referred to as a "super privilege," as the US can borrow in its own currency, while foreign governments, banks, and investors hold a large amount of assets denominated in dollars. As the dollar's share of global foreign exchange reserves gradually declines, Birnbaum suggests that the growth of stablecoins could enhance the use of the dollar and increase demand for US Treasury bonds.
