China relaxes restrictions on Nvidia H200 chips to boost competition for AI

According to CoinMeta and reports by the Financial Times, China has relaxed restrictions on Nvidia H200 chips in order to help domestic technology giants narrow the gap with their American competitors in the AI market. Beijing now allows small-scale shipments of H200 chips to top domestic tech companies, with ByteDance and Tencent recently receiving around 10,000 units each. Despite the relaxation of restrictions, Beijing has instructed companies to keep most of the H200 inventory in Hong Kong rather than transferring it to the mainland. In total, there is about 500,000 units of H200 inventory that are subject to these restrictions, and Hong Kong's infrastructure is not capable of making full use of these chips. This move reflects a gradual relaxation of policy on the part of China, but caution is still maintained in practice, allowing domestic companies limited access to advanced American hardware.
