U.S. economic data mixed, with tariffs between Iran and Canada becoming a focal point

According to CoinMeta, investment and live reporting indicate that U.S. economic data has been mixed. In July, the annualized number of housing starts in the U.S. dropped to 1.239 million, a decrease of 12.4% from June and 13.5% year-on-year. Starts for single-family homes also decreased, with completions falling by 9.1% month-over-month. However, building permits increased by 5.0% to 1.443 million, indicating that future construction plans are more solid than current activity. In July, U.S. import prices fell by 0.4%, while export prices fell by 1.3%. Despite the monthly decline, import prices were still 5.9% higher year-on-year. U.S. industrial production grew by 0.2% in July, matching the growth rate of manufacturing. The market was nervous due to Trump's statement that there were no negotiation arrangements with Iran, and it was confirmed that the U.S. naval blockade was still in effect. Iran insisted that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until conditions were met. The Canadian dollar weakened due to market pricing of the risks associated with U.S. tariffs, and the 50% tariffs scheduled to take effect on August 19 may affect the Canadian economy.
