Anthropic "Book Destruction Training AI" Scandal Reignites Controversy: Musk Promises to Preserve the Original Books

According to CoinMeta, the “book destruction scandal” involving Anthropic and AI has once again sparked controversy. Elon Musk promised to preserve the original books, but Sacks criticized him for being double-standard. Recently, it was discovered that ISBNdb was purchasing large quantities of used books for AI’s company, with a single order reaching up to one million copies, and using non-disclosure agreements to conceal the identities of the buyers. Although the report did not directly name Anthropic, their previous “buy books, destroy books, scan books, recycle books” project was mentioned again. The company had purchased millions of physical books, cut off their spines, scanned them at high speed, and then sent the original books for recycling. Internal documents show that the company did not want the public to be aware of this plan. What is more concerning is that rare and out-of-print books may also have been included in this process. It was also found that mysterious buyers were bulk-buying used books, which were ultimately traced back to Amazon’s warehouse in Las Vegas. Amazon acknowledges that they purchase books through commercial channels but did not disclose the specific quantity or the fate of the scanned data.
