According to CoinMeta, the New York City Council is investigating the marketing practices of prediction market platforms. Spokesperson Julie Meining (Julie Menin) stated that letters have been sent to four platforms: Polymarket, Kalshi, Coinbase, and Gemini Titan, indicating that the council has been reviewing their "false, deceptive, and unreasonable marketing practices" for several months. Meining pointed out that "prediction markets actively entice consumers to place bets in areas such as sports, politics, and culture." The letter mentioned a Wall Street Journal investigation into Polymarket, which alleged that its misleading marketing made content creators who collaborated with the platform appear to be winning, when in fact they did not use their own funds. This report prompted an investigation by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Meining added that the council will also investigate whether other prediction market companies use similar advertising strategies and plans to hold hearings on this matter.
