According to CoinMeta, the difference between intention-driven decentralized exchanges (DEX) and automated market makers (AMM) is that intention-driven exchanges allow users to conduct transactions by signing messages that describe their trading intentions, rather than interacting directly with liquidity pools. This shift marks a significant change in the architecture of DEX since its introduction in AMM. While AMM solved the liquidity issues that made early DEX unusable, it also led to high transaction costs. Intention-driven exchanges, by allowing traders to access AMM liquidity without bearing all the costs of the AMM mechanism, address structural problems such as slippage, MEV withdrawal, and temporary losses.
