According to CoinMeta, the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSSR) arrested over 20 staff members after conducting raids on nine unregistered cryptocurrency exchanges. These exchanges were accused of converting illicit funds obtained through telephone fraud into cryptocurrencies and sending them to accounts controlled by Ukrainian coordinators. The operation took place at the Moscow International Business Center, where it was noted that these exchanges were one of the overseas channels used to transfer funds out of Russia via cryptocurrency transactions. Investigators said that the victims, while maintaining contact with the fraud call centers, carried out transactions according to the detailed instructions of the scammers without realizing the nature of these transactions. It was also mentioned that many of the people recruited to work at these exchanges lacked sufficient financial knowledge and were attracted by the promise of easy money. The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched a criminal investigation into the case under Article 159, Paragraph 4 of the Criminal Code, as it involves particularly large-scale fraud.
