Ledger CTO: The Coldcard vulnerability incident sounds the alarm for the security of hardware wallets
2026-08-05 08:50:00
According to CoinMeta, Ledger Chief Technology Officer Charles Guillemet stated that the recent Coldcard vulnerability incident has sounded an alarm for the security of hardware wallets in the entire cryptocurrency industry. He pointed out that the vulnerability exposed flaws in the way some devices generate cryptographic randomness and highlighted how artificial intelligence is reshaping cyberattacks and digital defenses. Guillemet emphasized that Ledger's hardware wallet was not affected, as its root key is directly generated by a genuine hardware random number generator embedded in the authentication secure element, without any software fallback intermediation. He also warned that attackers are using artificial intelligence to scan code at "machine speed" to discover vulnerabilities, and that defenders must also upgrade accordingly, relying on security mechanisms, hardware, and mathematics to ensure protection.
