According to CoinMeta, former FBI agent Patrick Yaroch has been charged with using an internal system to transfer nearly $1 million in cryptocurrencies from wallets associated with foreign intelligence targets to accounts under his control. The criminal complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, accusing Yaroch of transporting and receiving stolen property across states. Yaroch joined FBI in 2017, worked in the National Security Team at the Boston branch, and later held a position in the Counterintelligence and Espionage Department at the headquarters of FBI, possessing the highest level of confidential security clearance. Yaroch became frustrated with FBI's failure to take action against cryptocurrency accounts related to hostile nations. The prosecution alleges that he made about 10 to 12 unauthorized transfers at the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025 using wallet credentials obtained during the investigation. Investigators also found that Yaroch discussed in his ChatGPT records how to invest or spend $1 million to maximize returns. Yaroch has been temporarily detained, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 4th in Alexandria, Virginia.
