According to CoinMeta, data from the Bank of Japan’s accounts shows that Japan may have spent approximately $34 billion intervening in the foreign exchange market last Friday to support the yen, building on its collaboration with the United States on Thursday. Based on a comparison of data from the Bank of Japan’s accounts released on Monday with forecasts by currency brokers, the operation is estimated to be around 5.33 trillion yen (about $34 billion). Finance Minister Taro Katsuno confirmed earlier on Monday that Japan had intervened in the market last Friday. The continuous buying of yen by Japanese authorities highlights their determination to counter yen bears. The US Treasury Department joined in supporting the yen last week, marking the closest coordination of exchange rate policies in 15 years.
