KOSPI Analysis of the 41% Crash: Why Did the South Korean Stock Market See the Largest Decline?
2026-08-02 19:52:30
According to CoinMeta, the KOSPI index has fallen by 41% since its peak in June, becoming one of the fastest collapses in South Korea's stock market history. This sell-off reflected the index's high dependence on semiconductors, exports, and leveraged trading, but it was followed by a strong rebound led by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Analysts believe that strong earnings and lower valuations helped trigger the market's recovery. According to the analysis, this latest decline is the fourth major KOSPI collapse in the past thirty years; historically, it lost about 76% during the Asian financial crisis of 1997-1998. Despite the risks, the current rebound indicates that investors consider the 41% drop to be too severe.
