South Korea's top five crypto exchanges see a 54.6% plunge in trading volume in the first half of the year

According to CoinMeta, as reported by Nexblock, in the first half of 2026, the trading volume of South Korea's five major Korean-won-based cryptocurrency exchanges decreased by 54.6% year-on-year, to approximately $366.58 billion. From July 1st to 27th, the cumulative trading volume of these five exchanges was about 17.34 trillion Korean won, a decrease of 16.9% compared to the same period in June. Among them, the market share of Upbit increased from 62.3% to 67.4%. South Korea's Finance Minister Koo Yun - cheol confirmed that the government will start imposing a cryptocurrency tax on January 1, 2027, with those earning more than 2.5 million Korean won per year facing a 20% national tax.
