According to CoinMeta, and as reported by the British Financial Times, the U.S. Treasury Department and Japan have jointly intervened in the Japanese yen exchange rate by directly purchasing yen to support it. This is the first time the United States and Japan have taken such joint action in nearly 30 years. The New York Federal Reserve carried out the operation on behalf of the U.S. Treasury Department, selling euros to buy yen, with transactions executed by Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. During a cabinet meeting with Trump at Camp David, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's notes indicated plans to purchase between 5 billion and 10 billion US dollars worth of yen. A spokesperson for the U.S. Treasury Department did not respond to the content of the memo or whether any intervention actions were taken that day.
