Cryptocurrency Recovery Plan: Have You Tested It?
2026-07-30 10:14:46
According to CoinMeta, Coinspectator reminds users that many crypto security recommendations focus solely on securely storing mnemonic phrases, but this does not address situations such as device failures, exchange account lockouts, or hardware wallet damage. A viable recovery plan should answer some basic questions, such as: Which wallets are hot wallets, cold wallets, observation wallets, or contracts? Which devices have two-factor authentication (2FA), and what would happen if they were lost? Is it possible to revoke active wallets and exchange sessions from other locations? Are there trusted individuals who know the necessary instructions without current access rights? Can the transaction history required for tax or insurance claims be reconstructed? Has a small test wallet been successfully recovered from a backup? The oddity of self-management is that preventing theft and recovering access can sometimes conflict with each other. Conducting one or two small-scale recovery drills per year is more useful than adding another security application and assuming the plan will work effectively.
